Upgraded FAMAS

Mission
The FAMAS F1 has been designed and mass-produced by Nexter systems. As an individual weapon for the French Army since 1980, it is still being regarded as an unrivalled baseline weapon among the 5.56 mm calibre assault rifles thanks to its reliability, ergonomics, firepower and accuracy.

Since it was created, the FAMAS F1 has been meeting the operational needs and has been modified (installation of the Multi-Purpose Handguard) so as to allow the fitting of sighting devices.
To meet the new current and future requirements in terms of individual weapon for the French Army, the FAMAS F1 is being modified and converted into a Low-profile FAMAS.

The role of the Low-profile FAMAS is to make up a common basis from which a further two versions will be available:

the Upgraded FAMAS, which will accommodate the current standard optical equipment,
the FAMAS FELIN, which will accommodate all of the currently-developed equipment as part of the FELIN programme. It will particularly be used for day and night firing, standoff sighting, rangefinding, as a snapshooting aid and as a combat identification device. Its ergonomics will be enhanced thanks to the setting up of a Man-Machine Interface (MMI).

The Low-profile FAMAS retains the capabilities of the FAMAS F1 (ergonomics, reliability, accuracy and rate of fire) while incorporating technical and operational improvements into it.

The Low-profile FAMAS also retains the training and practice means such as the blank firing attachment and the STCAL.
